Amylase Lab
In this lab, I was asked by my teacher to teach and run the lab for all the physiology classes along with my other friend since we have already completed the same lab last year in our AP Biology class. This lab involved the use of enzyme called Amylase that is used to convert an amylopectin, which is a starch, into maltose, or carbohydrate. It took about 3 days in total to complete this lab, in which on the first day we taught the class about how to use a micropipette to get an accurate measure of each liquid material and the procedures of this lab. We then set up all the materials that will be needed to perform this lab on the following day after school. On the second day, we closely monitored each group on whether or not they correctly follow the procedures. On the third day of the lab, we set up a machine called spectrophotometer that will help measures the absorbency of the product that was made and we also helped showing each group how to used the machine, so that they can get an accurate results. After the lab is completed, we also helped our teacher created a lab test and graded the lab report.
This assignment was important to me because it was my first time teaching the class, as well as running the lab. I was able to demonstrated my skills as a scientist and at the same time, it was also a reminder of what I have learned in my last year class and how well I can remember it.
After completed this lab, I now know how hard it is to be a teacher and I also know what career I would not be doing in the future. I learned that being a teacher takes a lot of patience because not all students is a good listener or a follower and now I feel much more appreciation for the energy all my teachers invested into teaching the class. I also learned about how enzyme assist in digestive system.
